Af Ursula Nistrup

Fernisering: Fredag d. 7. oktober, 2011 kl. 17-20
Åbningstider: Fredag – Søndag, d. 8.-24. Oktober, 2011 kl. 13-16 samt efter aftale.

Ursula Nistrup udstiller sit seneste værk Duett after Francis Alÿs.

To mænd bevæger sig gennem Venedig fra to forskellige punkter.

Bio
Ursula Nistrup (f.1974)

Opening hours: Fridays-Sundays, 8-24 October 2011, 1pm-4pm, or by appointment.

Ursula Nistrup exhibits her latest work, Duett after Francis Alÿs. The work consists of a two-part video installation documenting a performative event that took place in Venice in June 2011.

Two men make their way through Venice from two different starting-points. The first arrives from land, the second from the sea. Each of them bears a guitar and a small amplifier. As they walk, each of them plays his part of a pre-composed melody, whilst at the same time listening out for the other’s melody.

The work takes its starting-point from a notion of navigating aurally, and in how the architecture of Venice creates special listening conditions and contributes to the city’s varied acoustics. The work is concerned with the possibility of a meeting, and with how a meeting takes place, as well as what it is to focus on a primary action, for example playing a melody, whilst simultaneously having one’s attention directed externally toward a meeting with someone else.

Duett after Francis Alÿs is inspired by a 1999 performance by Belgian artist Francis Alÿs. In that performance, two men each carried a part of a tuba whilst making their separate ways through the streets of Venice to find each other and, upon meeting each other, to re-assemble and play the tuba together. In her new work Duett after Francis Alÿs, Nistrup uses the 1999 work and the same labyrinthine city of Venice as a backdrop to examine the relationship between the musical duet and the dialogue between two people as a phenomenon.

The project is supported by the Danish Arts Agency’s Committee for Visual Arts and Copenhagen City Council

Her projects often consist of, or refer to, found materials, through which surprising and unplanned situations arise. Nistrup has exhibited both nationally and internationally, most recently at the IMO and Skulpturi in Copenhagen, Reims Scène d’Europe Festival, France, Walden Affairs, Den Haag, Holland and The Center for Contemporary Art, Lagos, Nigeria. She has been a resident guest artist at a number of international institutions, including The Danish Institute in Rome (2011), Platform Garanti, Istanbul (2010) and Cité des Art, Paris (2009).
